SSDI lists Mabel Lucille Van Wicklin, b. 1 Mar 1894, IL with mother's name Pollock, and d. 22 Aug 1943, Los Angeles, CA 10 Jan 2008 email from Fred Van Wicklin provides this account from Warren Van Wicklin concerning A. R. Van Wicklin "Roy VW owned his own art supply shop in Chicago and did porcelain painting. He went out of business during the depression and moved by himself to Detroit to find work. His wife and son stayed in Chicago with her parents. Roy stayed with family of Warren VW in Detroit until he also lost his job and had to move into a smaller house. Between Warren and Frederick Perry VW, Roy received enough money to buy a train ticket back to Chicago. Roy was in pretty poor health when he left Detroit. That was the last anyone saw Roy. Chicago was the better option for Roy because the police were not being laid off and Roy's father in law was a Chicago policeman. It is possible Roy may have left his family in order not to be a burden to them." [I purchased a piece of porcelain that was painted by Roy VW from Catherine on RubyLane.com. Below is a photo of the piece that I purchased.}
Hand painted porcelain, Chicago Studio Artist, Arthur R. Van Wicklin, 5 piece dresser set. This porcelain tray measures 11" long by 8 and 1/8" wide by 3/4" high. The under glaze marks, for all items are Count Thun's Porcelain Factory, Czechoslovakia, which dates them 1918 to 1939. The covered bowls measure 3 and 3/4" high with lid, by 4 and 5/8". 19 April 2012 email from Esther Van Wicklin provided detailed clarification of the vital statistics for Arthur Roy's two wives and his five children. Documentation received from Esther includes US Census records, Cook County marriages index, Indiana marriage collection [for second marriage to first wife!], Cook county birth and death index, Illinois deaths and stillbirths index and WWI draft registration cards. Through her painstaking research, she was able to confirm that Arthur Roy had five children. Part of the confusion over the years was that two of the boys were named Roy and two were named Jack. [Two died young and subsequent siblings received the same names.]
